Alder, Italian

Alnus cordata

Italian Alder (Alnus cordata) leaves/ foliage

The beauty of this plant is the foliage which glistens in the sun and remains lush and green, even in drought conditions. The bark and branching structure provide winter interest. This tree is remarkably durable and trouble-free and should be planted more, especially in difficult growing conditions. This tree has a comfortable beauty year around. Grows 40’-50’ high and 15-20' wide.

This tree can be planted in some of the most difficult soils. You may want to situate it in a place where the pyramidal shape and structure can be accented in the dormant season, such as placement where the outline is visible against the sunset. And because the foliage remains a lush green into the autumn, you can also blend it with trees that have brilliant fall color which will provide a pleasing contrast with the Italian Alder’s foliage.
