Of all the Oaks, Red Oak is the most distinguished for its bold, clean trunk and branches. The smooth bark is striated in long, vertical sections with the smooth, raised surface contrasting with the darker-colored bark in between. The structure is especially handsome in the winter. Red Oak is a large tree, growing up to 70' or more. It tolerates high PH soils, but will languish in urban heat and compacted soils. If soil conditions are less than ideal, you should consider the Black, Shumard, or Nuttall Oaks instead.
