Syringa pekinensis 'China Snow'
Pleasing flowers and sensational bark are on offer here with the Peking Lilac "China Snow", or Syringa pekinensis, especially in winter when eye candy in the garden is most welcome. The reddish bark exfoliates in horizontal curls reminiscent of the Paperbark Maple. The habit is open. It grows 20'-30' high and 15'-20' wide. Urban conditions and difficult sites are tolerated moderately well.
Place the Peking Lilac "China Snow" appropriately for wintertime as a snow-covered landscape in the background beautifully accents the bark. The early spring foliage is very pleasing, especially when other trees are bare. The branches are long and slender and, if the tree is properly situated in the landscape, can exhibit a pleasing dimensional effect. Good companion plants include long-needled evergreens such as Pines.
Although native to wooded areas on slopes, valleys and ravines in northern China, Peking Lilac Trees do very well in North America.
