Of all the Oaks, this is the most distinguished for its bold, clean trunk and branches. The smooth bark is striated in long vertical sections with smooth raised surface contrasting with the darker colored bark in between. The structure is especially handsome in the winter. Grows large, up to 70' or more. Tolerates high Ph soils but will languish in urban heat and compacted soils. If soil conditions are less than ideal you should substitute for the Black, Shumard or Nuttall Oaks.
